Who comes\nto mind? Matt in charge of first aid, Rishi from finance, it could even be\nBoris in upper management. All worthy picks, we are sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, you\u2019re probably overlooking the one\nasshole you can actually do something about, and that\u2019s you.&nbsp; To paraphrase the biggest selling artist of\nthe 1980s, you\u2019ve got to start with the asshole in the mirror, admittedly he\ninspired this advice without really living by its teachings, yet pay no mind to\nthat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth of the matter is, we are being\nfacetious. But just because you aren\u2019t assholes, it doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t\nimprove your remote job prospects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Not the Messiah, just a\nnaughty boy<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Plenty of people in the unemployment line\nare there because they decided to let their work do all the talking. You could\nbe Christ reborn with an ergonomic keyboard but it really won\u2019t matter if you\ncan\u2019t develop the emotional connections that keep the big money returning. This\nis more difficult over Zoom, so you have to work extra hard on presentation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, we aren\u2019t your parents, but it really\nis important to start your day looking like a genuine grown up adult. We spend\na lot of our days doing interviews and meetings over video chat so make sure\nyou look your best from at least the midriff up. Of course; trousers are\noptional but that\u2019ll be our little secret. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>All that jazz<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your appearance shouldn\u2019t be the only thing\nthat\u2019s taken care of. Communication has become more important than ever.\nDevelopers hate feeling observed or micro-managed. But still, reach out to\ncoworkers and engage, don\u2019t just dive down the rabbit hole with freeform solutions\nnot requested by the person paying the bills. You want to improvise? Do it on\nyour own time, there\u2019s bound to be plenty of open mic opportunities at your\nlocal jazz joint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Mr Gorbachev put up that\nwall<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t let Trump read this, but not all\nwalls are bad. Use rooms in your house to create a separation between work and\nplay. Avoid working from bed, it ruins your productivity and your sleep.\nTwo-for-one! Of course, we don\u2019t all live in the mansion from Cluedo, so those\nlacking a spare billiard room or library have to internally build these walls.\nThis means splitting up your day, maintaining a routine and taking time off.\nWhen your work is done, change areas, lay on the couch, whatever works for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Working hard or hardly\nworking<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the subject of sleeping, if midday\nsiestas work for the citizens of Spain and children, why would it not give us\ndevelopers the energy to make it through crunch time. Have you ever met a\nchild? Full of energy, but luckily for developers they have neither the\npatience, inclination nor problem solving skills to steal our jobs. That\ndoesn\u2019t mean remote developers can\u2019t steal from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Join a developers\ncommunity<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Remote work can\nmake programmers feel a little isolated. Splendid isolation works for some of\nus, but it risks absolutely obliterating your productivity levels. The next\nbest thing from direct human contact is connecting with your peers on a virtual\nbasis. Joining a developers group online can really help to shake the cobwebs\noff by teaching you new techniques and tricks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Everyday\u2019s a school day<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Well that\u2019s the idea anyhow. When you\naren\u2019t spamming your chosen developers community with tips that ensure you\nbecome the belle of the digital ball, put that solitude to good use. Online\ncourses are a great way to prove your value to potential employers as well as\nthrowing you a proverbial lifeline when you are struck down with developer\u2019s\nfatigue.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well what more can we say? You can lead a\nhorse to water but you can\u2019t make it programme. In other words if you\u2019ve\nalready mastered the technical side of your role, sticking to this guide will\nensure there are no more long faces.
